Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection in and of the gums that often starts as plaque, an opaque film over the teeth that forms tartar. As plaque and tartar build up it invites and harbors bacteria that begin to invade the soft tissues around your gums. This is the beginning of gingivitis which, left untreated, becomes a more serious gum disease called Periodontitis. Periodontitis leads to the decay not only of soft tissue, but also your teeth and eventually your jaw itself. Unfortunately, aside from bad breath and gum bleeding, there are few early warning signs of this disease. Oftentimes this disease advances slowly, without pain.
Research has shown that in addition to tooth loss, gum disease can be linked to stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and even an increased risk for pregnant women. Gum disease leads to a weakened immune system.
