Crown

Sometimes when a tooth or teeth have sustained enough damage, or are cracked or otherwise chipped, or perhaps badly discolored, a dental crown might be the best choice for you.

Crowns are caps that your dentist fits directly over a tooth that needs reinforcement for a variety of reasons. They restore function and appearance and are designed to match the shape, size and color of your surrounding teeth.

Crowns might be used to protect a tooth that has been weakened by decay; to hold together parts of a cracked tooth; to restore a tooth that is worn down or broken; to protect the remaining tooth structure after a large filling has been placed, or to cap a dental implant. Crowns can also be used to make a cosmetic modification, and to hold a bridge in place. For children, a crown can be used on baby teeth to save a tooth that’s been so damaged by decay that it can’t support a filling, as well as protect the teeth of a child who is at high risk for tooth decay.

Dental crowns can be made from stainless steel, all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, resin, or ceramic, and gold. Stainless steel crowns are primarily used as a temporary measure to protect the tooth or filling while a permanent crown is made from another material. Porcelain-fused-to-metal look more like regular teeth, while all-ceramic or all-porcelain provide a better natural color match than other types of dental crowns. Resin crowns are usually less expensive, but can wear down over time.

During your first appointment we will prepare the tooth for the finished crown, and may install a temporary while your permanent crown is being fabricated. During your second visit we will install your permanent crown.

Please call Broadway Dental if you think dental crowns might be right for you.
